Decorating for Spring

I don't know about you but I'm over winter. Seriously over it. 

What's a girl to do when she has the winter doldrums, decorate for spring.

This post is going to be heavy on the pictures, light on commentary.

If you're like me, you just came to see the decor anyway.

I'm experimenting.....If I have place settings at the island,

will it not be the catch all when we walk in the door?

We shall see!

I went with lime green for my accent this year.

I love the brightness of it.

Add a bunny and a bird's nest. Simple and cheap, but makes a statement.

Add color with ribbon by wrapping it around flower pots and crocks.

Don't forget to decorate the top of your refrigerator.

It keeps your eye moving around the room. 

I like to call it candy for my eyes!

Brighten up your hutch with white dishes. I love the pop of color.

Add apples, bunnies and lots of greens to make it feel springy.

I love to layer. Again, candy for the eyes!

Also, keeping things in odd numbers is another trick I use.

Hi there!! We are so glad you stopped by.

I know it's been a long time, a really long time.  

But, we're back! And, we have a lot of great projects to share with you.

Let's start with fall decorating!

This year I kept it pretty simple.

My barn wood box...I love how simply it can be changed for the seasons.

Hey, the top of the fridge is a shelf, right?

No flat surface shall be left behind.

Add touches of light with small lamps.

Add ribbon for a seasonal look.

Countertop decor.....

Add a placemat under appliances and a fake plant in a clay pot.

Another flat surface....I know, it's a sickness

Trays and placemats are a good anchor for decorating.  

They keep items together and give a bit of definition.

A little touch for the island (another lamp) I'm all about lighting.

The nice thing about lamps is they give you some height when balancing out decor.

Remember, your eyes like to have different textures - and heights - to look at.

Since I have THE smallest porch in the history of ever,

there aren't a lot of options, so I keep it simple.

Put some burlap in a wire basket and fill with flowers.

The burlap works as a filler, and, keeps them in place.

Add some flameless candles to turn on when you're expecting guests. 

It gives it a warm feeling.

Tuck in some greens for texture and color.

Hobby Lobby and Ikea have fantastic greens at affordable prices. 

Even the birdcage got a little fall love this year.

(please excuse the ugly cord - at least it's black)

Add some lights to the top of your hutch, and a lamp for added soft lighting.

When I decorate I like to step back, look at it, and adjust it until it makes my eyes happy.

DIY Valentine's Day Decor

HELLO!!  We're so glad you stopped by! You may have noticed, but my mom and I have not posted anything in quite some time.  Between the two of us, we had a very busy 2015.  My sister got married, so wedding planning was in full swing.  Mom landed her dream job with the St. Paul Police!  I graduated college and had a full time law office internship, my husband was required to relocate for his promotion, so we had to get our family and house prepared for a move that ultimately never happened because the same position opened up at his current location (Praise God!)  But, we're BACK.  And we have a lot of great things we are going to be sharing with you!  Valentine's Day is hands-down my favorite holiday/season to decorate for.  I am as girly as they come.  Any reason to bust out pink decor and glitter is my kind of party! I am going to share very quick, easy DIY Valentine's Day decor pieces that you can create with pieces from the dollar section at Target! Bakers Twine.  I literally tie this stuff around everything I can!  Tie them around candles to give them a "pop" of color.  Spools of twine: $1

Felt cut-out letters.  Also in the dollar section at Target.  I had a burlap wrapped canvas in my craft room, so with the felt and the bakers twine, I was able to throw this together in seconds.  

Add scrapbook paper to frames.  I got a 10 pack of Valentine themed paper for $1.   I got the black frame and the "C" at Hobby Lobby.  The rose balls are also from Target, but they were not in the dollar section.  You could easily make these with artificial flowers and Styrofoam balls (see our spring flower balls post!)

I have a Cricut machine, so I used more of the scrapbook paper to cut out phrases to frame.  

It is hard to see the smaller frame, but it says "I love you a bushel & a peck"

Candles.  I found plain pink candles at Walmart.  I believe they were $.50 a piece.  This was my chance to bust out my glitter!  I brushed Mod Podge onto the candles (I used the Gloss finish).  Then I used white/iridescent glitter.  You could even use Epsom salt if you have that around the house.  My husband hates finding glitter all over the place, so I spray hairspray over the glitter when I am done to prevent it from falling off!

The silver "&" was also from the Target dollar section.  It was $3.  This could also be recreated by buying a wooden letter, brushing mod podge on the letter, and sprinkling Glitter or Confetti over the glue.  You will probably pay more for the supplies than you would just buying the item at Target, though.

So, where did I get those pink candlesticks?  My mom's garage sale.  I bet she regrets giving them to me now :) If you are not lucky enough to find something like this at your mom's house, most thrift stores are bursting at the seams with candlesticks!

They looked like this:  

I used True Red, Dragonfruit, and Bubblegum pink acrylic paint by Americana.  You will have to apply a few coats of paint.  I think I did three?  

Originally I was going to do flower balls on the candle sticks, but I ran out of brads and flowers.

I got a pink chalkboard in the Target dollar section.  This one was also $3.  I used gems to monogram the chalkboard.  Originally I wanted to line the chalkboard with flowers, but I ran out of those too.  It was -30 degrees outside and I was not leaving the house to get more.  

Instead, I painted the legs, and added flowers that I currently had on hand to finish the chalkboard.

And lastly.  I needed to create something to hold all of my gummy flowers that I cannot. stop. eating.  This would make a perfect teacher gift for your children to bring on Valentine's Day! 

You guessed it.  I got the jar in the target dollar section.  They also have pink and red! 

I glued burlap around it, and wrapped my trusty bakers twine around it.  

If you are wondering... yes, I did eat all of the gummies.  Presley will have to get some more for her teacher!

Winter Centerpiece and Porch

Hi there! Thank you so much for stopping by. Like many of you, I'm dreaming of spring,  but - I'm thinking it may be a while before I see it. In the meantime, let's embrace this thing we call the season that never ends. Here's how this centerpiece started....... Last fall, I was preparing for Thanksgiving  and decided that I would like to have something that I could decorate and keep for the season, instead of one meal. As you can see, it can be used for every season. We have some barn wood from my husband's grandparents barn.   I treasure this wood and the history behind it.   I thought it would be perfect for such a project.

The wood was SO old and SO dirty. I scrubbed it, in my laundry tub, with a brush and dawn dish soap. We could not believe the beauty that was beneath all that grime.

I filled the box with floral foam,  placing my battery candles in between each piece of foam. The thing I love most about these candles, they have timers. No need to turn them on each night.  They magically turn on at 5:00 and turn off at 10:00.

I filled in around the candles with pine branches I got from Michael's.  I added some pine cones,

silver snowflakes, and bulbs to imitate snowballs.

That's it.  Pretty easy. When I want to remove my decorations from the table for meals, I pick up the box and move it.  So easy! Since we're talking about winter............

Here's a peek at my front porch. If we're going to have 6 months of winter, we might as well make it pretty.

I started with this plaid blanket with bright colors and worked from there. The lantern seemed like the perfect accent. 

The ice skates were my moms and she so graciously passed them on to me  when I told her I wanted them for my porch.   Thanks, Mom, they're perfect! I hope I've inspired you to take something and give it new life, in your decor. Until next time,
